Friday, August 8: Time Trial

We need people prior to the event to help set up the course for the Time Trials. Barricades need to be moved from their drop off point to the general area they will be finally placed. Snow fencing/signage also needs to be put up. The race starts at 1pm and lasts approximately 2 hours during which time we will need people along the course to monitor spectators. We will also need help tearing down the course after the event. The event starts at the corner of Culver Rd and Lakeshore Blvd in Irondequoit and ends at the Port of Rochester.

Saturday, August 9: Criterium

There is a lot of preparation prior to the race. Starting at 9am, we need people to move barricades from the sidewalks to the edge of the street, so once the streets are closed to vehicles, they can be moved into the street. There are also placards and/or snowfence to be attached to the barricades, signs to be distributed around the course, hay bales to put in place and balloons to blow up, plus a few other tasks including picking up trash!

As for the race itself, we need race course marshals who are essential to a successful and safe event. As this event grows, more and more volunteers are needed to line the course in order to keep both the racers and the spectators safe. You will be placed along the course to monitor the spectators, making sure they don't step out or ride a bike in front of riders as they pass by.

Amateur races start mid afternoon with the pros finishing up around 10:30pm. For the volunteers, the day is divided into 2 shifts, The first one is approximately 2:30-7:30pm and the later shift is approximately 7-11:30pm.

A short orientation will be given prior to your shift start. Once assigned, we expect our volunteers to complete an entire shift. Volunteers will be given water, a t shirt and cap, whistles and a meal voucher. RBC members volunteering for this event also receive an invite to the free catered volunteer appreciation dinner in the fall.

After the race is over, we need people to take down all the barricades, put them back on the sidewalks, move signage back into storage along with taking down whatever we put up in the morning. We expect the volunteers monitoring the night portion of the race to help with clean up. It sounds like a daunting task, but with enough help, we can be done in as little as 30 minutes!

Sunday, August 10: Road Race

We need help setting up the start/finish areas as well as placing signs along the course. We also need road marshals during the race. This is a 100 mile race that will start in Honeoye at 11:30am and finish at Highland Bowl around 3pm. Road marshals will be needed at strategic intersections throughout the race course. You will be instructed to arrive at an assigned spot approximately 30 minutes prior to the expected time the racers will be passing by, then can either go home or move to another section of the race to monitor another section. These riders are moving very fast, so their expected arrival time is only a guess!
